{ Teacher Feature - May } :: June den Hartog

June is Back! Starting this month we will be doing little monthly features on one of our teachers :] What better way to say welcome than a silly blog post, no? So thanks, June, for being our first ever Teacher for the feature!

Welcome back, June! She has been lovingly caring for her parents up in Canada, everyone send a few thoughts of love her way for strength and support, because we could all use a little extra love. Heck, give yourself a little mental love squeeze right now. I’ll wait.

{ Know that you are always love }

So June is back! And we are also extremely excited to announce how our studio space is changing to bring you all even more wellness in the

community. Starting in June we’ll have an absolutely lovely next door neighbor, Nicole, who will be doing m e s s a g e s ~ Yes! Now you can get messages and yoga from us! And right next to her is June’s room! The reformer room :].

But Pilates in a yoga studio? Madness, right? Well, luckily June has decided to brave this new frontier here in Weaverville and will begin offering DISCOUNTED PRIVATE LESSONS to kick-start the summer season (and uh, let me just tell you, we’ve got some AWESOME summer events planned). Starting at the last week of May – oh, that’s next week! – you can connect with June and start your Pilates journey.

June is a Certified Pilates Instructor by the PMA and has been practicing for over a decade! She’s also been practicing Physical Therapy since 1992 and has used both to shape a Pilates practice with emphasis on proper alignment, strength building and modifying the practice to each person’s bio-individuality. To help her, and Y O U, achieve your Pilates dreams, she’s enlisted the help of her reformer! (shown above)

Don’t worry folks, the craziest we may get in a yoga class is busting out some blocks but Pilates takes it to a whole new level! The reformer, or Universal Reformer as Joseph Pilates himself called it to indicate it adaptable level for all, is a machine that uses body weight and counterbalance to help build muscles evenly and efficiently.

The reformer has the versatility to take yogic style stretches and load them up with users choosing the level of weight and intensity they want for each exercise. A large, full range of motion can be maintained during exercise which promotes lengthening of the muscles which can then be maintained through the balance of weights. The beauty in this is the focus on eccentric muscular contractions – this is when the muscle lengthens while resisting force – which promotes the long, strong muscles, instead of the bulk muscles, that Pilates is known for.

Well, we could talk all day about it – but you’ve got to get in there and feel it! People who are fans of vinyasa yoga will enjoy the work that Pilates introduces into the body that might seem more foreign to the practiced yogi. Yogis who prefer the more gentle, restorative side will enjoy the connection the reformer can help cultivate in the body and bring balance of strength that most people need. Whatever your intention or curiosity is that brings you to try a private pilates lessons, know the June will competently find you a routine within your level/desires and leave you with a wonderful impression of the world of Pilates.
